Leading Through Change Isn’t About Control—It’s About Capacity

I’ve worked with many clients who’ve struggled to lead change or navigate major transitions in their organizations. And the truth is, perpetual change isn’t going anywhere.

Nearly every modern leadership article emphasizes it:
If you can’t lead through change, you won’t lead for long.

Over the years, one thing has always struck me: how consistently surprised—and frustrated—leaders are by how people react to disruption and uncertainty.

Someone inevitably asks me:
“Have you ever seen a company handle change as badly as we are?”
And I always respond:
“Yes. Every company that’s ever gone through change.”

When I led enterprise-wide initiatives, I’d always caution:
It won’t go as fast, smoothly, or cleanly as you think.
That’s why change management exists.

We are leading in an era of nonstop disruption. You can either fight that reality—or learn to lead differently within it.

To borrow a blunt line from an old movie:
“You’ve got to get your mind right.”

That means learning to both expect and accept what comes with the territory:

  • Expect challenges—even with a solid plan
  • Expect confusion—even when you’ve been crystal clear
  • Expect mistakes—even with experienced teams
  • Accept the human factor—people struggle with change, and not everyone reacts well
  • Accept competing agendas, shifting priorities, and communication breakdowns
  • Accept that change is messy—not black and white. You’ll need to adjust, negotiate, and adapt as you go

But let me be clear—this isn’t about just bracing and surviving.

This is where strong leadership matters most.

Leaders must:

  • Optimize and mitigate what they can
  • Plan for what’s controllable
  • Accept what isn’t—and lead anyway
  • Stay focused and calm, even in the storm

You can’t lead change well if you’re constantly fighting the nature of it.
It’s not just about managing the process—it’s about managing the people going through it.

Expect the unexpected.
Lead with your eyes wide open.
And be the calm others can count on.
